With millions of children in childcare in Australia and considering that almost 300,000 more children will need a place in a government-subsidised early education centre in 2019-20, the demand for early childhood educators has increased significantly and many job vacancies will need to be filled in the next few years.
Apart from Bachelor Degrees in Education, there are two accreditations available to work in the field.
The Certificate III of Early Childhood Education and Care provides the professional knowledge as well as the practical skills needed to become successful child care educators employed in a wide variety of early education settings (in a centre-based service like an Early Learning Centre or Occasional Day Centre, in family day care or as a nanny), under direct supervision or autonomously. Graduates will be trained to operate within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard.
The course will lay the foundations for a study pathway that can lead to the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care by instilling language and communication skills, interpersonal skills and time and project management skills in its graduates. Those who will attend the course will engage in role plays, interactive class activities and discussions as well as a final work placement to gain valuable on-the-job experience.
Graduates will be able to provide care for children, babies and toddlers, offer experiences to support their learning and holistic development, develop their cultural competences, support their wellbeing by promoting and providing healthy foods and drinks, ensure their health and safety and provide emergency first aid responses.
They will also learn how to establish positive relations with children, implement an approved learning framework and work ethically.
The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care promotes the development of extensive skills, in-depth knowledge and understanding of pedagogical practices needed to work as an early childhood educator who is responsible for designing and implementing an approved curriculum in early childhood education and care services within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard.
This nationally recognised qualification is the perfect opportunity to take the next step on a child care career path as it builds on the existing knowledge and skills acquired in Certificate III.
Graduates will learn how to create engaging learning experiences, design fun, educationally-guided curricula that aim at fostering childrens’ holistic development, wellbeing, creativity and cooperative behaviour.
They will also learn how to establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment, identify young people at risk, implement strategies to promote the inclusion of all children and operate in partnership with families.
They will acquire the confidence to lead a team and work as a qualified, autonomous room leader or occupy management positions in a variety of childcare centres.
Once this qualification is completed (after a course of study of at least 2 years), one can require a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), which allows to stay in Australia for 18 months with a full-time working permit (one will not need to attend school anymore) and gain first-hand experience after the studies in order to land a Sponsor or even a Permanent Visa in some cases.
