A worldwide recognised English certification, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is taken by almost 3 million people every year. There are over 1,000 test centres, 50 alone located in Australia.
If English is not your mother-tongue and you desire to take a government-approved test that assesses your knowledge of the language to then be able to enrol at university, engage in professional pathways or obtain a visa, this is the perfect course for you.
This course is therefore ideal to gain a well-round knowledge of the English language (starting from an intermediate entry level), fill any gaps and be prepared for what awaits on the day of the examination.
Candidates may choose between two modules:
- The General Training one, the traditional IELTS exam chosen by those who need a certificate for immigration or work purposes, curricula requirements or admittance to vocational courses;
- The Academic on, a more specific IELTS exam undertaken by those who want to meet academic entry requirements (e.g. to enter Australia’s higher education system)
Either module is made up of four sections, each testing a different language skill: Listening (four parts and 40 minutes to complete the task), Reading (40 questions regarding various passages of increasing difficulty to complete in 60 minutes), Writing (two writing pieces to produce in 60 minutes) and Speaking (tested in around 15 minutes through 3 parts in a one-to-one recorded conversation with an examiner).
The first and last sections are the same no matter the module is chosen, while the Reading and Writing assignments are more complex for those who take the Academic one.
The final exam score ranges from 0 to 9, the latter being the highest.
There are several exam dates in a year, scheduled on the same days all over the world.
Once a candidate passes the exam, the certificate is valid anywhere in the world for two years.
This exam requires tailored and thorough preparation as each examination sitting requires a 330-dollar fee and if the minimum threshold isn’t reached, one fails the test and has to take it again. Preparation courses last between 10 and 12 weeks, but the more training one undertakes, the higher the chances of receiving a high grade.
The lessons help students familiarize with the test format through a detailed analysis and guided practice of the different task types and receive intensive vocabulary, grammar and speaking training.
