With thousands of job openings every year, mechanics are more and more requested as shown by the SOL list.
There are three certifications available to qualify for different job positions and operate in the field.
The Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology provides training for new employees or workers who perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive light vehicle retail, service and repair industry.
This certification is suitable for new entrants seeking an apprenticeship in Australia or international students who wish to study and develop skills and knowledge within the automotive repair industry in Australia.
Classes are conducted face-to-face and assessment consist of a variety of written theory questions, case scenario simulations and practical observations.
Graduates will be able to test and repair basic electrical circuits as well as carrying out the main servicing operations and diagnostic procedures. They will have learnt how to inspect engines, replace batteries and jump-start vehicles.
They will be able to diagnose malfunctions and repair starting, charging, braking, steering and suspension systems.
They will know how to inspect petrol fuel systems and repair emission control systems.
They will be taught to follow environmental and working best practices in the automotive workplace.
The Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis provides professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to perform advanced diagnostic tasks on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.
Graduates will possess a sound knowledge that will allow them to test engines with a dynamometer and diagnose complex system faults when it comes to light and heavy commercial vehicle braking, steering and suspension, transmission and driveline, hydraulic systems as well as both petrol and diesel engines. They will also be able to operate on high voltage rechargeable energy store systems, high voltage traction motors and motor speed control systems in battery electric vehicles.
They will be able to repair performance in both carburetted and fuel injection systems.
The Diploma of Automotive Technology reflects the role of skilled professionals who possess who are able to analyse, evaluate, diagnose, design and modify vehicle systems in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.
Those who will complete the course will be able to analyze and evaluate electrical and electronic faults in all systems, including body management, engine management, HEV and BEV management, monitoring and protection, theft-deterrent, air conditioning and HVAC systems.
They will be able to apply mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic system modifications as well as evaluate faults in gas fuel systems.
They will be able to operate on the motorcycle, wheeled mobile and light vehicle and evaluate vehicle body repair materials, equipment and work processes.
They will develop document specifications, present technical reports, develop and implement workplace policy and procedures for environmental sustainability.
Once this qualification is completed (after a course of study of at least 2 years), one can require a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), which allows to stay in Australia for 18 months with a full-time working permit (one will not need to attend school anymore) and gain first-hand experience after the studies in order to land a Sponsor or even a Permanent Visa in some cases.
Attendance: full-time twice a week

Payment: quarterly instalments
